The prophet Jonah is upset with God "Better for me to die than live," (Jon 4:3), because he does not want to go to preach to the Ninevites. Even though the name "Jonah" means dove, he was not certainly a lovable and peaceful messenger. Would you volunteer to preach to Hitler, to Mussolini, to Saddam Hussein? The positive twist of this biblical story is that the Ninevites believed in God and repented of their sins, so the conversion did happen. It would be a mistake, however, to think that the conversion took place because of the prophetic eloquence of Jonah. Only God can accomplish that through you and me.
