We still feel the glittering lights of Christmas, maybe the excess of egg-nogg is still running through the system. As we celebrate the Holy Family, we actually continue the Christmas celebration with Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Strangely enough, the word "family" is not mentioned in the gospels, whereas "household" is used at least four times. The word "family" comes from the Latin "famulus," which means servant. Perhaps the gospels' writers had a better idea to speak about household. This institution is not an automatic and easy living, it is rather a vocation, a challenge, an art. Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, in spite of great difficulties, made the best of it. Family can be like hell on earth, but the Holy Family made heaven on earth. The Christian family is also called "small church," and, as we know, the church is made indeed of imperfect people..
