By reading carefully Luke 19:28-40 we easily discover that the underlying topic of Palm Sunday is not really the triumph of Jesus but the prediction of his upcoming passion. The Old Testament reduced sin and suffering to a mathematical formula: the suffering undergone by any person was thought to be directly proportioned to the number and gravity of the sins that person committed. While the book of Job demolished this thinking, it did not come with a solution either. Palm Sunday is a partial answer to the mystery of suffering: God willed the suffering of his Son as the only vehicle to salvation.
